Our students, who live in Northern New Jersey and attend grades 6 through 12, move through each school day celebrating challenge due to the joy and fulfillment that is found when they are encouraged to do and learn more. Newark has 656 students. 78 faculty members teach at Newark.
General Information
Newark has responded to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery by instituting numerous programs for DEI. Newark has incorporated DEI into conferences, workshops, and student affinity groups. Furthermore, Newark has enacted DEI training for students, parents, faculty, and staff. See developments below:

Actions Taken

Anti-Racism, Bias, and Diversity Training
  • Newark has "committed to work with an external diversity, equity and inclusion consultant who will offer training and guidance on best practices for implementing Newark Academy’s articulated goals and actions."
  • Beginning in Fall 2020, Newark will "create capacity building opportunities for parents and alumni on racial equity, social justice, cultural competence, implicit bias, and microaggressions."
  • Beginning in Fall 2020, Newark will "implement regular student-led meetings with administrators, the Head of School and Board of Trustees to discuss issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion at Newark Academy."
  • Newark offers affinity groups from the Office of Equity and Inclusion.
Curriculum Changes and Requirements
  • Newark is conducting a curriculum review to incorporate DEI.
Faculty/Staff Requirements
  • Newark states that, "Newark Academy faculty and staff have engaged ongoing professional development on diversity, equity, and inclusion aimed at offering guidelines for preventing and interrupting bias-related incidents in and outside of the classroom."
  • Newark states that, "The school’s current strategic plan includes a mandate to assemble a faculty and staff composed of 30 percent faculty of color by 2023. In support of that initiative, NA’s academic leaders regularly attend targeted hiring conferences to identify talented teachers. Upon joining our community, educators benefit from NA’s Office of Equity and Inclusion’s faculty/staff affinity groups that welcome both new and veteran NA educators through discussion, mentoring and support."
Symbolic Actions
  • Newark announced that after May 2020, the school responded to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery with "a series of meetings and honest conversations with our Black students and alumni on race, equity and social justice" that " culminated in NA’s Equity and Inclusion Summit that took place on July 1 and 2, when we listened and learned from students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff."
  • Newark "developed a system of accountability for the list of actions that Newark Academy is taking in order to address institutional racism and social injustice."
  • Newark states that "the Head of School has charged as a small task force with the task of overseeing an internal review of departmental policies and procedures using a lens of racial equity and social justice."
  • Beginning in Fall 2020, Newark has committed to "develop and articulate a system of accountability for the list of actions that Newark Academy plans to take in order to address institutional racism and social injustice."
  • Newark held a BLM protest on June 27, 2020.
  • On July 22, 2020, Newark announced on Facebook that it would hold an event titled, "What's Past is Present: Housing, Segregation, and Racial Inequity in Essex County." This post was also featured on its Instagram and Twitter accounts.
  • On June 12, 2020, Newark announced on Facebook, "Newark Academy is working to respond in myriad ways to calls for racial justice in our community. These same issues are being articulated on social media by our students and alumni." This post was also featured on its Instagram and Twitter accounts.
  • On June 2, 2020, Newark participated in Blackout Tuesday on Facebook and stated, "Students are invited to attend Addressing Systemic Racism: Charting Our Path as a Community this coming Friday, June 5. Separate meetings will be held for the Middle School and the Upper School." This post was also featured on its Instagram and Twitter accounts.
