"New Jersey Medical School, located in Newark and part of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, is committed to educating humanistic, culturally competent future physicians. Our community fosters diversity in the medical profession and actively recruits students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in medicine. New Jersey Medical School was founded in 1954.

Actions Taken

Anti-Racism, Bias, and Diversity Training
  • The NJMS Department of Surgery DEI Committee "was created in 2020 in response to the social injustices faced by our nation." The committee states that the department would "[p]rovide a safe forum where issues of racism, bias, microaggression, and other breaches of DEI can be discussed and addressed."
Curriculum Changes and Requirements
  • The school's DEI policy seeks to "review and modify NJMS curriculum to promote an understanding of diversity and equity across all educational domains."
  • In order to “prepare students from diverse backgrounds to be collaborative physicians, educators and researchers with a focus on the health of underserved and vulnerable populations,” NJMS has an innovative curriculum with a focus on culturally competent care.
  • The NJMS Department of Surgery DEI Committee "was created in 2020 in response to the social injustices faced by our nation." The committee states that the department would "[i]ntegrate the principles of DEI into all educational efforts, including featured speakers, workshops, conferences and courses created or promoted by our department."
Faculty/Staff Requirements
  • NJMS' Department of Surgery states that "formal implicit bias training for all faculty and resident interviewers has been implemented" in order to "mitigate bias during residency interviews."
Program and Research Funding
  • The school's DEI policy seeks to "value and support research that advances an understanding of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice."
  • The Office of Primary Care, Diversity and Community Engagement is "responding to the need for a diverse healthcare workforce that resembles the diversity of today’s patients" by establishing pipeline programs and partnering with the: Hispanic Center of Excellence, Health Careers Opportunity Program, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/AAMC Summer Medical and Dental Education Program, and the Mini-Medical School.
  • The purpose of the Visiting sub-Internship Program for Underrepresented in Medicine at the Department of Emergency Medicine is to "develop individuals underrepresented in medicine (UiM), as well as to champion cultural competency, community service, and humanism in all aspects of medical education."
Resources
  • The school's Office of the Dean released a memo laying out their DEI policy, expressly "that diversity, equity, and inclusion enhances our ability as an academic community to foster innovation and excellence."
  • The school's DEI policy intends to "equip NJMS leadership, faculty, and support staff to address issues pertinent to diversity, equity, and inclusion."
  • Previously called the Office of Special Programs, the Office for Diversity and Community Engagement engages in partnerships to "embrace and recognize the impact that diversity has on the educational experience of all students and on the delivery of culturally competent quality healthcare."
  • The Medical School’s Library offers a number of resources for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Medical Education that include numerous books, articles and talks to promote anti-racism.
  • The mission of the Office of Primary Care, Diversity and Community Engagement at NJMS is to "develop individuals underrepresented in medicine and other health professions, as well as to champion cultural competency, community service, and humanism in all aspects of medical education."
Symbolic Actions
  • On September 14, 2022, the school held an event on the topic of "Implicit Bias and Structural Racism's Impact on a Diverse Workforce."
  • Supplemental to the NJMS curriculum, the Medical School offers seven selective Distinction Programs for students interested in DEI initiatives who will be noted as a Distinction Scholar on their transcript and diplomas.
  • The Medical School hosts monthly talks called Rap Sessions, which are “monthly one-hour sessions for the Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion to meet with underrepresented racial and ethnic minority (URM) medical students and discuss current social, political, and health-related Hot Topics.”
