Actions Taken

Anti-Racism, Bias, and Diversity Training
  • The college hosted an "Equity Professional Development" series, featuring several seminars such as "Implicit Bias and Intergroup Dialog Workshop Resources," "From Colonialism to Commodification: Cultural Appropriation and Contemporary Racism," and "Aggressions & Affirmations: Nothing Micro About it."
  • The Office of Title IX, Diversity, and Inclusion at Camino "Facilitate[s] training for administration, faculty and staff regarding equal employment opportunity and prevention of unlawful discrimination and sexual/gender-based misconduct in the academic setting/work environment."
Political Actions and Support for Anti-Racism
  • The El Camino College Academic Senate adopted a resolution in favor of Black Lives Matter and also "encourage[d] ongoing critical reflection and for staff, faculty and administrators to have difficult and honest conversations concerning systemic racism, social injustice, racial and ethnic bias."
Resources
  • The college has provided students with anti-racism resources.
  • The college recently created the "President’s Advisory Committee on Race and Equity."
  • The college is opening a Student Social Justice Center in the Fall of 2022.
  • The Student Equity Advisory Council is now known as the the "Students' Unity Network," which "works directly with the Social Justice Center to support diversity and equity-related student clubs, and provide leadership opportunities for students." The Goal of S.U.N is to " help address the needs of student groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education."
  • The March 6, 2023 Camino job posting for a librarian "specializing in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility" states, "This position will encourage positive race-consciousness and embrace human difference within the library and its services; support culturally responsive practices within the library; and strategically build buy-in and participation among colleagues for equity related initiatives within the department."
  • The aim of the Social Justice Center at El Camino is "to serve as an inclusive space committed to social justice through education and collaboration."
Symbolic Actions
  • The college hosted the “CommUnity Walk Against Hate” in March 2022 and invited members of the public "in anticipation of the Fall 2022 opening of the Student Social Justice Center" and to create "awareness about incidents of racism and hate crimes within the South Bay area."
  • On June 14, 2023, in response to an anti-Israel statement made at the El Camino commencement ceremony, the college president stated the following: "...her statement was not approved by El Camino College officials and does not reflect the values and views of El Camino College. Anti-Israel sentiments can lead to a rise in antisemitism...the College continues to make every effort to assess the very important DEIA [Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility] and anti-racism work that we are collectively undertaking. Education and awareness are powerful tools in combating intolerance."
