School Information
"As Indiana’s premier urban public research university, IUPUI believes in the power of transformation. We are committed to providing educational opportunities that transform the lives of our students, our community, and the changing world around us... "It was this commitment that was behind the merger of the Indianapolis campuses and programs of IUPUI—some of which are more than 100 years old—that won accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission in 1969, creating IUPUI. "And it’s what binds us together today. We’re now Indiana’s premier urban research university offering more than 450 undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs from Indiana University and Purdue University." The university enrolls over 30,300 students and employs over 2,500 faculty. General Information
IUPUI has not only taken symbolic steps to support advocates of critical race theory, by placing a Black Lives Matter mural on campus, but it also has extended its financial support. The university established a "Center for Africana Studies and Culture". Additional actions may come, especially as the center commences its work. No mandatory Critical Race Training sessions are yet required of students. However, see developments below:

Actions Taken

Faculty/Staff Requirements
  • IUPUI has set up an Action Committee. One of the initiatives of the Action Committee is to “[require] all job openings to include the campus commitment to anti-racism, incorporate diversity questions in job applications, interviews and reference checks for applicants.”
  • IUPUI requires OEO Anti-Discrimination Training for all faculty and staff. Furthermore, there is a faculty Common Read Program which discusses “How to Be An Antiracist” by Ibram X. Kendi.
Program and Research Funding
  • The university is establishing a "Center for Africana Studies and Culture" through its School of Liberal Arts. The university also launched the "Through Their Own Eyes" scholarship program.
  • Another initiative of the Action Committee is to “[establish] a fund and selection committee (perhaps Chancellor’s Diversity Cabinet) to support unit-level anti-racist initiatives.”
  • Ever since 2020, the school has been hosting the “Creating Racially Inclusive Classrooms Webinar/Conference” which serves as an “[instructional] development course helping faculty infuse diverse content (perspectives, realities, histories, etc.) into existing classes.”
  • The school hosts the Multicultural Leadership Empowerment Program, which hosts lectures on “diversity and identity; digging up the roots; power, privilege, and oppression; dealing with diversity; and now what-towards praxis.”
Resources
  • IUPUI expanded its “White Literacy Project,” started in 2018.
  • The Ruth Lilly Medical Library created a guide on "Anti-Racism, Inequity, and Implicit Bias in Health Care."
  • For students, the Action Committee suggests reading the book “Is everyone really equal.” Other reading initiatives are being put in place.
