"Located 35 miles southwest of Chicago, Lewis University is a comprehensive, Catholic university, where the traditions of liberal learning, values and preparation for professional work come together with a synergy that gives the university its educational identity and focus. Lewis is one of 60 universities worldwide, sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, an international Roman Catholic teaching order." The university enrolls over 6,400 students, has a 13:1 student-faculty ratio, and has 80 undergraduate majors/programs of study, 37 graduate programs, and two doctoral programs. General Information
Lewis University has been increasing its resources for its students. The university will be hosting Dr. William Barber (president of the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP) who will discuss "the significance of the Black community in the United States, ways in which allyship can be formed, and invited to identity a call to action." No mandatory Critical Race Training sessions are yet required of students. However, see developments below:

Actions Taken

Admissions Policies
  • Lewis' 2020-2022 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plan states that it would "[a]ctively recruit students from historically-underrepresented and marginalized groups" and "[c]ollaborate with university admissions for diversity in student recruitment and representation in multicultural committees."
Anti-Racism, Bias, and Diversity Training
  • Lewis' 2020-2022 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plan states that it would "[p]rovide professional development for staff and faculty on recognizing their own biases and student success."
  • The Office for Student Engagement and Multicultural Student Enrichment at Lewis University "empowers students through campus education on issues of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression...."
Curriculum Changes and Requirements
  • As part of the general education requirements at Lewis University, all undergraduate students are required to complete a course in Diversity and Social Justice.
  • Lewis' 2020-2022 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plan states, "Changing student needs dictate the necessity for varied course delivery options and the integration of diversity and inclusion initiatives into the curriculum." The plan also recommends that "Colleges/Departments revise curriculum to identify opportunities to include specific appropriate diversity and inclusion initiatives in their courses."
Disciplinary Measures
  • Lewis outlines its bias incident reporting protocols and states, "If you have witnessed or experienced a bias-related incident, please use the concern form below to make a report."
Program and Research Funding
  • The Diversity Engagement Committee (DEC) at Loyola University seeks to “study and discuss emerging trends, best practices, data, and research related to diversity and inclusion in higher education and in society at large and identify ways to further promote and advance campus wide conversation and action.”
  • The Peace and Justice Studies program at Lewis is described in part as follows: "Rooted in Catholic social teaching and shaped by Lasallian praxis...It critically engages students in addressing contemporary social justice problems and building 'just peace.' Community engaged, interfaith work toward just peace is actively self-reflective, antiracist, and evolving."
  • Lewis' 2020-2022 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plan states that it would "[r]etain, build on, and expand opportunities for interdisciplinary research and practice to enhance an appreciation for and understanding of diversity in areas that are curricular and co-curricular."
Resources

  • University hosted an "Anti-racism, Allyship, and Action" talk in February.
Symbolic Actions
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are a key part of Lewis University where their “collaborative efforts, both internal and external, promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in ways that aim to be transformative – inclusive excellence.”
  • On January 29, 2024, Lewis News reported that "[t]hree Lewis University students won the top spots in the Agape Connection MLK Oratorical Contest on January 14" who "created and presented speeches focusing on Critical Race Theory and the philosophy, beliefs, and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr."
  • As a self-declared "Sanctified Zone," Lewis states that it "seek[s] to acknowledge, value, and celebrate diversity" in all of its programs by "recognizing that prejudice, ignorance and stereotypes create and sustain privilege and preference for some while marginalizing and oppressing others."
