As one of the nation’s leading polytechnic universities, NJIT provides students with the edge they need to be leaders in today’s competitive high-tech marketplace” (Source: https://www.njit.edu/admissions). The school has a total enrollment that exceeds 12,000 students (Source: https://www.njit.edu/about/key-facts). Furthermore, “as the state’s public polytechnic university, we continue to invest in the renewal of our existing facilities in addition to adding new spaces, with the goal of providing an exceptional teaching, learning and living environment. NJIT offers more than 125 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in six specialized schools instructed by expert faculty, 98 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their field” (Source: https://www.njit.edu/about).

Actions Taken

Admissions Policies
  • On February 18, 2021, it was announced that NJIT is launching the Hispanic and Latinx Leadership Council in order to “advise, counsel and support NJIT’s drive to increase its percentage of Hispanic and Latinx undergraduates from 20% to 25% by 2025 and thereby qualify to earn the federal designation of being Hispanic-serving.”
  • On June 29, 2023, NJIT's president issued a statement in response to the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action which reads in part as follows: "Though NJIT should not be affected, because our admissions process is of a holistic nature and predominantly focused on assessing a student’s ability to succeed at our university, the court’s decision presents a broader concern. While race should never be used as a condition to preclude anyone from opportunities, institutions of higher education must seek to construct learning environments that provide maximum benefit to their students. Diversity of all types–racial, gender, cultural, socio-economic, religious, etc.–is essential for the optimization of the educational experience and is something we value deeply at NJIT."
Anti-Racism, Bias, and Diversity Training
  • NJIT launched a program for “leadership and bias-mitigation training” in 2021. This was “a component of the NSF-funded NJECC that aims to broaden participation in cybersecurity through leadership training for cybersecurity students and data-driven, bias-mitigation training for students and faculty at NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing.”
Resources
  • NJIT has a page dedicated to Diversity & Inclusion Resources, including “affinity-based resources” and other related resources.
  • The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering offers DEI resources in support of its goals to “advocate for institutional change towards a more inclusive environment for all” and “raise awareness about inequalities/injustices faced by the University community” among other goals.
Symbolic Actions
  • On November 14, 2022, New Jersey Institute of Technology announced that it appointed its first chief diversity officer as David E. Jones.
  • NJIT offers several Diversity & Inclusion organizations and “identity-based organizations” for students.
  • On March 8, 2023, NJIT held the 2023 Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging University Forum on the topic of “Advancing a Culture of Inclusion and Belonging at NJIT.”
  • DEI is among the Office of the Provosts “Priorities and Initiatives.” NJIT is dedicated towards its goal to “create a welcoming and inclusive campus environment.”
  • NJIT’s Innovation Institute has a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Certificate program which offers training on DEI topics. The program “provides key fundamentals to transform your organization’s workplace culture into an inclusive environment where everyone thrives.”
  • NJIT offers Interactive Diversity Activities including programs and workshops.
  • As part of the NJIT Strategic Plan of 2025, the school will “create and train an institutional Diversity Committee and require the presentation of search committee plans to the deans and new Diversity Committee.”
