General Information
Northern New Mexico College operates an Office of Equity and Diversity. Its former director has since been promoted to the state’s government as the Deputy Secretary of Higher Education. The office remains active on Facebook, promoting Black Lives Matter protests, anti-racist books, and POC grief sessions. There is no evidence NNMC requires critical race theory-related training for its students or faculty.

Actions Taken

Political Actions and Support for Anti-Racism
  • The Office of Equity and Diversity posted a message on Facebook encouraging its followers to attend a June 2020 Black Lives Matter rally led by the NNMC Black and African American Student Organization.
  • Black Lives Matter protestors shut down a road on June 19, 2020. This rally was promoted on Facebook by NNMC's Office of Equity and Diversity.
  • The Office of Equity and Diversity posted a message on Facebook encouraging its followers to attend a "POC Grief and Support" Zoom session.

  • The Office of Equity and Diversity posted a statement on Facebook encouraging its followers to "Educate oneself against ignorance" as "part of our collective liberation."   • According to the Strategic Plan of 2028 released in April of 2023, a core value of Northern New Mexico College is that “[we] respect the differences of all peoples; diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are our strengths.”
  • The President’s statement on Equity & Diversity at Northern states that “[throughout] the spring term, we will be offering opportunities for deeper conversations and learning more about how we create and sustain an equitable and diverse campus.”
Symbolic Actions
  • In October 2020, Governor Lujan Grisham appointed NNMC's Director of Equity and Diversity, Patricia Trujillo, to the position of Deputy Secretary of Higher Education. She led the Office of Diversity and Equity for 10 years.
