- General Information
- Sierra Nevada University adheres to a “Diversity Statement” that fuses racial justice and climate justice. It upholds diversity as an “essential facet of an education” and emphasizes equity. Its Masters of Fine Art in Interdisciplinary Art program issued a statement supporting “Black Lives Matter,” condemning America for centuries of “oppression and marginalization,” defending “unrest and unease,” and pushing to “replace [the voices] of white privilege.” There is no evidence SNU requires critical race theory-related training for its faculty or students.
SNU's diversity statement claims that "climate justice is racial justice." It seeks to "cultivate an academic community with an emphasis on equity," adding, "we believe diversity is its own reward, and is an essential facet of an education that prepares students to be thoughtful and engaged citizens of the world."
The Masters of Fine Art in Interdisciplinary Art Program issued a statement supporting "Black Lives Matter." It writes, "The world is filled with unrest and unease, and rightfully so. This country is entrenched in centuries of enacting and upholding oppression and marginalization of those without an armful of privilege." It adds, "We have a responsibility to push against this condition and up space for those voices to be heard and to replace those of white privilege."
Associate Dean of the College of Education and Human Development and Professor of Multicultural Education Eleni Oikonomidoy received the "2020 Inclusion, Equity and Diversity Leadership award." She teaches graduate and undergraduate classes at University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). Note: UNR is in the process of acquiring Sierra Nevada University.
