General Information
Southern New Hampshire University announced over the summer that it will be reviewing its "general education program and majors...to more directly address issues of race and equity" as an "ethos that runs throughout an SNHU education." No Critical Race Training sessions are yet required of students. See developments below:

Actions Taken

Admissions Policies
  • On June 30, 2023, SNHU's President issued a statement in response to the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action which reads in part as follows: "Today, the Supreme Court struck down Harvard and UNC’s affirmative action programs, reversing decades of precedent and progress, and ultimately restricting the ability for colleges and universities to address historical racial inequalities that persist in higher education and our country...While the Supreme Court decision does not outlaw diversity, it has made our processes for ensuring racial diversity much harder. The decision is dispiriting, and many in our community are feeling discouraged, but this decision is not defeating. We will work harder than ever to make sure we honor our commitment to diversity at Southern New Hampshire University."
Curriculum Changes and Requirements
  • The university announced, "We will review our general education program and majors, especially Criminal Justice and Justice Studies, to more directly address issues of race and equity, not as a single course, but as an ethos that runs throughout an SNHU education."
Program and Research Funding
  • In 2020, Southern New Hampshire University became a "Building, Recruiting and Inclusion for Diversity (BRAID) Affiliate for its commitment to supporting underrepresented students in technology programs." Through its involvement with BRAID, SNHU would "have an opportunity to collaborate with other institutions demonstrating efforts to increase the representation of racial/ethnic minorities and women in undergraduate computer science programs."
Resources
  • The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has a DEI Resource Library within the SNHU Shapiro Library providing numerous resources on anti-racism, bias and equity, race and ethnicity, and social justice.
  • On June 28, 2023, SNHU News published an education article titled "What is the SAT?" which discusses, in part, the controversy over standardized testing. The article includes a quote from author Ibram X. Kendi who stated, "'Standardized tests have become the most effective racist weapon ever devised to objectively degrade Black and Brown minds and legally exclude their bodies from prestigious schools'."
  • The University's DEI Resource Library provides a list of key diversity terms and definitions, fiction works based on underrepresented main characters, and resources for teachers to serve diverse students and subjects.
  • The University's library has an "Identity-Based Career Resources" page that serves "to prepare diverse and historically underserved and underrepresented populations for career success as part of their learning experience." This includes identity specific networks, scholarships, and internships.
Symbolic Actions
  • The Office of Diversity and Inclusion at SNHU states that it "nurture[s] a culture free of prejudice and discrimination and work[s] to champion human rights and social justice." The Office also "call[s] on the SNHU community to listen, learn, inquire and act."
