General Information
Southwestern College will be taking steps to internally audit its operations to align them with its agenda. The college launched the "Belong" Equity effort, which will collect data that will help the college "build and strengthen equity and inclusion". The results of the study have not yet been released. No mandatory Critical Race Training sessions are yet required of students. However, see developments below:

Actions Taken

Admissions Policies
  • As part of Goal 1 of the Superintendent/President’s Three Year Goals: 2021-2024, the college will “work with college leaders to develop new and innovative programs that will increase enrollment, including an intentional focus on marginalized communities.”
  • As part of Goal 3 of the Superintendent/President’s Three Year Goals: 2021-2024, the college will “increase transfer rates,” “decrease the number of unit’s students are taking,” and “provide administrative and fiscal support” to eliminate “equity gaps for disproportionately impacted student groups on campus.”
Anti-Racism, Bias, and Diversity Training
  • As part of Goal 1 of the Superintendent/President’s Three Year Goals: 2021-2024, the college will “identify, revise, and develop administrative procedures that require anti-racism, implicit bias, and related trainings in critical areas.”
  • As part of the Educational Vision Plan 2030, the school made a commitment to “[maintain] a district-wide culture focused on diversity, equity and inclusion through regular and consistent training, professional and leadership development opportunities.”
  • The Biology Department requires Lavender Spaces training, which is a training program for LGBTQ+ topics, for all faculty.
Curriculum Changes and Requirements
  • In order to qualify for transfer to the California State University system and to meet the general education breadth requirements, all students are required to complete a minimum of 3 units in Ethnic Studies.
Program and Research Funding
  • As part of Goal 4 of the Superintendent/President’s Three Year Goals: 2021-2024, the college will “ensure financial support for programs” and “leverage financial power to dismantle white supremacy and institutional racism.”
  • The school hosts the Advancing Equity Teaching Institute which is a “three-day summer institute that takes place prior to the start of the semester” where “participants engage in dialogue about the culture of equitable education and that of the educational system we have been brought through.”
  • The school’s Advancing Equity Teaching Academy is a “year-long faculty professional learning program designed to close equity gaps and promote systemic change by developing faculty leaders who will not only transform their own classrooms through equitable and inclusive educational practices but also have a positive impact on their departments in particular and the SWC College District as a whole.”
  • Southwestern College’s Advancing Equity Academy is a program for professional learning consisting of a “semester-long training and peer learning program [that] is intended to complement and align with the Advancing Equity Teaching Academy (AETA) offered to faculty.”

  • In its Mission and Values statement, the school provides definitions for DEI terminology.
  • Within the Educational Vision Plan 2030, the school stated that it will “[ensure] diversity, equity, anti-racism, and inclusion is embedded into the objectives of the college’s updated Strategic Plan, which will be aligned with the college’s DEI plan, Local Vision College goals, Governing Board goals and superintendent/president’s goals.”
  • According to the Educational Vision Plan 2030, the school will “[ensure] consistent review and updating of the college’s core values with a focus on diversity, equity, anti-racism, and inclusion” and “[ensure] every department has a diversity, equity, and inclusion plan by the end of 2022.”
Symbolic Actions
  • The university issued this as part of its Juneteenth statement, "As an educational institution that centers on equity, inclusion, and anti-racism, we must recognize that systemic and structural changes are still needed to realize the freedom Juneteenth commemorates."
  • Southwestern College released the Superintendent/President’s Three Year Goals: 2021-2024 with six goals for an “inclusive, equity-focused, anti-racist campus culture.”
  • The Biology Department will hold “[discussions] with students on how to make the biology dept. more inclusive through promoting a better sense of belonging.”
