School Information
Walla Walla Community College inspires students to discover their potential and to achieve their goals by providing diverse and challenging learning opportunities. It is located in rural Southeastern Washington with campuses in Walla Walla and Clarkston. WWCC attracts students from throughout the Northwest and also serves two large correctional facilities.
General Information
Walla Walla Community College is in the early stages of implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. It is set to roll out an “Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” A “Strategic Plan for Equity and Inclusion 2014-2020” was released, setting goals for a DEI officer, imposing mandatory cultural competency requirements for faculty and staff, weaving DEI into professional development plans, and imbedding equity into every aspect of faculty and staff recruitment. Starting in the 2022-2023 academic year, students will be required to receive DEI training at each public college and university in Washington, including WWCC.

Actions Taken

Admissions Policies
  • WWCC seeks to "embed equity, diversity, and inclusion competencies into position announcements, job descriptions, job postings, posting locations and recruitment, strategies, and hiring criteria and the evaluation of applicants." Another objective is to "implement mandatory training for search committee participants to reduce unconscious bias."
  • The Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion will “[collaborate] with college offices & departments to develop and coordinate outreach and awareness programs designed to increase the enrollment and success of traditionally underrepresented student populations.”
Anti-Racism, Bias, and Diversity Training
  • WWCC is in the process of developing an "Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion."
  • WWCC created a "Strategic Plan For Equity And Inclusion 2014-2020." It established strategic goals including "a leadership-level position for a Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer," and an effort to "Build equity, diversity and inclusion competencies for WWCC employees through sustained professional development and training."
  • On May 12, 2021, Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bill "which mandates that Washington's 40 public colleges and universities conduct training sessions and assessments for both faculty and staff around diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism starting in the 2022-23 academic year."
  • WWCC is instituting "mandatory college-wide trainings for all faculty and staff."
Curriculum Changes and Requirements
  • WWCC "provides faculty training that integrates equity and inclusion with pedagogy and classroom strategies aimed toward enhancing student success." It also "incorporates equity and inclusion training into individual professional development plans."
  • The school will “[collaborate] with Instruction as an advocate for inclusive pedagogy practices and for the development of courses and curricula that include equity and inclusion.”
Faculty/Staff Requirements
  • The OEDI made a commitment to “[collaborate] and support recruitment strategies for diverse candidate pools and professional training to promote intercultural competencies and a climate of equity and inclusion.”
Political Actions and Support for Anti-Racism
  • Following the guidelines from Washington’s Senate Bill 5227 requiring climate assessments of schools, the school conducts a climate survey “to understand the current state of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the learning, working, and living environment on campus for students, faculty, and staff.”
Resources
  • The OEDI has a lengthy “Commitment to Diversity” statement outlining its DEI priorities.
  • The school has resources such as a link to the “Racial Equity Tools Glossary.”
