General Information
The University Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Committee (UDIAC) is "working toward a goal of 100% employee participation in cultural responsiveness training, and application of intersectional approaches to pedagogy, research, and curriculum on diversity." See p4 of their 2019-2020 Strategic Plan. After the Derek Chauvin trial ended in April 2021, the leaders of WOU made a statement that said, in part, "In the coming weeks and months, you can expect to see more information about projects, programs, and initiatives from all over campus toward inclusivity, anti-racism, bias reduction and equity; including new policies, training programs and opportunities to share your ideas/needs."

Anti-Racism, Bias, and Diversity Training

  • The University Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Committee (UDIAC) established the goals of working toward a goal of 100% employee participation in cultural responsiveness training, and application of intersectional approaches to pedagogy, research, and curriculum on diversity.
  • The WOU College of Education has established JEDI: The office of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion centers anti-racism and anti-colonialism in our college. By placing justice first, we amplify the need to name oppression and remove barriers for students, staff, and faculty who traditionally experience inequity, invisibility, and harm in institutions of higher education.
  • WOU's 2021 Diversity Plan states that it would "[p]rovide professional development and training for faculty to be critical of, create and revise curriculum in recognition of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility."
  • The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion lists the Spring 2023 trainings that took place for that semester.
Curriculum Changes and Requirements
  • WOU's 2021 Diversity Plan states that it would "[e]mbed diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility in the curriculum and new student orientation."
  • WOU's 2021 Diversity Plan states that it would "[d]evelop a mechanism for programs to review their curriculum specifically for increasing inclusion, focusing outside the dominant groups, and removing bias, racism, prejudice, or targeting of marginalized groups."
Faculty/Staff Requirements
  • WOU's 2021 Diversity Plan states that it would "[r]equire completion of the available training through HR for hiring committees and set expectations for search committees to address implicit bias, cultural responsiveness, and equity."
  • WOU's 2021 Diversity Plan states, "As required by the Oregon House Bill 2864, WOU must provide cultural competency training for all employees."
Symbolic Actions
  • Students of color at the university are claiming "the university processes are getting in the way of them being heard."
  • On June 4, 2020, WOU's President issued a statement in response to the death of George Floyd which reads in part as follows: "The nation and our campus need to listen to what people from oppressed and marginalized groups have been saying for years. We need to listen to what Floyd said with his dying words, 'I can’t breathe,' a tragic statement for one man and terrible reality for millions more."
