Actions Taken

Anti-Racism, Bias, and Diversity Training
  • Creighton provides diversity training for its faculty development and incorporates it into its grand rounds.
Curriculum Changes and Requirements
  • The school's Medical Education Program Objectives document states that in order to "attain the Doctor of Medicine degree," the Creighton student must achieve the following program objective of the medical education curriculum: "Apply an understanding of diverse patient populations and the medical consequences of common societal problems to healthcare prevention and treatment plans."
  • As part of the the Liaison Committee on Medical Education requirements, Creighton states the following: "The faculty of a medical school ensure that the medical curriculum provides opportunities for medical students to learn to recognize and appropriately address gender and cultural biases in themselves, in others, and in the healthcare delivery process."
Program and Research Funding
  • The school's Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion list its pipeline programs which include the Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MMS) program. The MMS Programs is "one of the First Generation Diverse Medical Student pipelines at Creighton School of Medicine (SOM)" and "is a program aimed at filling a gap in advance of students pursuing careers in medicine or other health care professions."
  • The Mini Medical School Program at Creighton "aims to open opportunities to a population that is often overlooked for generational advancement: 4th-12th grade first-generation, rural, Native American, allies in diversity and inclusion and underrepresented students."
Symbolic Actions
  • The school's Dean stated the following: "As a Jesuit medical school, Creighton is devoted to globally reducing health care disparities. To achieve this lofty goal requires ongoing efforts to recruit and retain diverse administrators, faculty, students, trainees and staff. We seek to operationalize an experience that reflects an inclusive academic medical environment.”
  • The school's Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging in Medicine states, "Our office remains aligned with the greater mission of Creighton University that Jesuit values have always stood for equity and justice."
  • The Office of Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging in Medicine states, "With the private sector already emphasizing the critical need for DIB programs, it only makes sense that education is at the forefront of such development."
  • The Office of Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging in Medicine published the following quote on their homepage: "'Each of us must become motivated to actively navigate through the imperfect psychosocial storm caused by racism'."
