School Information
Founded in 2014, "The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV will serve our patients, students, medical professionals, and community as a transformational force for improving healthcare in Nevada. This is accomplished by delivering evidence-based, innovative centers of excellence in medical education and research, coupled with cost-effective, high-quality care that improves the health of our community members throughout their lifespan, becoming an integral contributor to an Academic Health Center, and creating a culture of collaboration through inclusion and excellence" (Source: https://www.unlv.edu/medicine/about).
General Information
The school has engaged in a couple DEI efforts. Namely, the school commissioned an artwork within a theme of "diversity, inclusion, and acceptance." Furthermore, coaching sessions are offered by the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. No mandatory training for anti-racism is required at this time. See developments below:

Actions Taken

Admissions Policies
  • The UNLVSOM Strategic Plan states: "We will recruit and select academically talented students from Southern Nevada and nearby communities who reflect the diverse population the school aims to serve."
  • The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the school of medicine "hosts monthly small-group mentoring sessions for pre-medicine students of color at Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) institutions." Additionally, "medical students are present at each session to offer peer support and advice about the process of becoming a successful medical school applicant."
  • The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine "strives to attract and support individuals from groups historically underrepresented in medicine."
Curriculum Changes and Requirements
  • The Department of Gynecologic Surgery and Obstetrics' DEI Statement includes the following initiative: "Incorporation of DEI curriculum and anti-racism training into our resident and medical student curricula."
Resources
  • The school states that “the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) offers mentoring and coaching sessions throughout the year for students who are interested in medicine.”
Symbolic Actions
  • The school affirms that “as an academic medical center, it is our privilege and responsibility to train and mentor future healthcare providers who will understand, appreciate, and advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion and are well-positioned to provide the best care to all people.”
  • On November 23, 2022, it was announced that “the class of 2022 commissioned the first painting to hang in MEB.” The painting hanging in the Medical Education Building represents a theme of “diversity, inclusion, and acceptance.”
  • The Department of Gynecologic Surgery and Obstetrics' DEI Statement reads in part as follows: "As a department, we recognize the historically unacceptable practices of experimentation on enslaved women, forced sterilization, and reproductive coercion. We also realize the current day impacts of racism, homophobia, and anti-trans attitudes that create barriers to care and lead to profound health disparities for our patients."
