"One of the nation's most recognized centers for medical education, Tulane University School of Medicine is a vibrant center for education, research and public service. Tulane University School of Medicine is the second-oldest medical school in the Deep South and the 15th oldest medical school in the United States. Tulane School of Medicine is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education." Opened in 1976, it is the main practice location and teaching center for the medical school faculty. The Tulane Abdominal Transplant Center, Cancer Center, Center for Wound Healing, Hernia Center, Chest Wall Defects Center, Pediatric Heart Center, and Cardiovascular Institute are located here. Admissions Policies
  • As part of its Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Statement, the Department of Neurology states that it is "focused on recruiting and training residents of diverse ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, racial, and religious backgrounds."
  • The Office of Graduate Medical Education seeks to "understand and invest resources into recruiting, supporting, and retaining a diverse physician workforce that includes members from groups that have been historically marginalized and underrepresented in medicine."
Anti-Racism, Bias, and Diversity Training
  • As of August 3, 2022, the school is "Requiring every member of the SoM community to complete an online training module focused on 'Diversity in the Workplace'."
Curriculum Changes and Requirements
  • As of August 3, 2022, the school "Established annual school-wide diversity grand rounds, first topic was titled 'ERASE-ing Mistreatment by Patients,' which addressed mistreatment of healthcare professionals by patients including but not limited to overt racism, sexual harassment, and microaggressions."
Disciplinary Measures
  • As of August 3, 2022, the school "Established a Professionalism Task Force to evaluate the SoM’s Professionalism/Environment of Learning Program and mechanisms to report and track unprofessional (including racist/discriminatory) behavior."

  • As of August 3, 2022, the school has "Mandated EDI [Equity, Diversity, Inclusion] training for executive faculty, faculty search committee members, admissions committee members, and residency and fellowship program directors and coordinators."
Program and Research Funding
  • TUSOM offers several Pathway Programs that are geared towards underrepresented students and includes the New Orleans Health Leaders Project which "aims to support underrepresented undergraduate students in the medical school application journey by creating a peer support group that facilitates networking, provides guidance and mentorship, engages in community service, and helps develop the leadership skills critical to becoming a physician."
Resources
  • On October 15, 2019, the school held an event titled "trust and Authenticity: Building Sustained Relationships with Our Colleagues and Those We Serve," which featured Dave McIntosh, PhD, Vice President and Chief Inclusion and Diversity Officer at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. McIntosh's research "examines race and oppression utilizing phenomenology and critical race theory, as well as assessment and campus climate."
  • The school is creating a "5-year EDI and Anti-Racist Strategic Plan" as part of the university-wide strategic planning initiative titled "Strategy for Tomorrow." (As of August 3, 2022)
  • As of August 3, 2022, the school "Launched the Anti-Racism Leadership Program (ARLP) and the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) to improve the diversity of the university’s management and leadership ranks..."

  • The school's Liaison Committee on Racial & Social Justice in Medical Education is a "student-led committee established in response to Tulane University School of Medicine’s (TUSOM) Call to Action, denouncing the murder of George Floyd and our country’s extensive history of racial and social injustice." The primary aim of the committee is to "enhance education in racial and social justice across the curriculum by reviewing curricular content, providing feedback, and offering recommendations."   • The school's Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, in response to the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, has committed to a "more focused effort to become an anti-racist section and to intensify our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts." The Department has "developed a process for working towards a Strategic Plan for DEI in Tulane Child and Adolescent Psychiatry," formed a steering committee, and created "four committees, Recruitment and Retention (faculty, trainees and staff), Self-Improvement, Clinical Training and Community Engagement."
  • As part of its Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Statement, the Department of Neurology states that it would "develop initiatives to educate our trainees on healthcare disparities and social determinants of health to help promote equitable health care delivery to our patients."
  • Every fall and spring the Office of Multicultural Affairs hosts Diversity Grand Rounds. The topic of the Fall 2024 presentation was Implicit Bias.
Symbolic Actions
  • The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology issued a Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Statement which reads in part as follows: "We know that systemic inequities and underrepresentation in medicine contribute greatly to healthcare disparities, particularly in the field of obstetrics...we are committed to cultivating and celebrating diversity in our department within a welcoming and inclusive environment. We strive to recruit, develop, and advance a diverse workforce, foster the academic advancement of underrepresented minorities in medicine, and promote education and scholarship related to inequities and injustices in healthcare."
