General Information
Franklin and Marshall College has implemented a new bias incident response team and created an online reporting tool for bias incidents. It has also named its first vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion. No Critical Race Training sessions are yet required of students. See developments below:

Actions Taken

Anti-Racism, Bias, and Diversity Training
  • In October 2021, the college held "The Anti-Racist Writing Workshop: How to Decolonize the Creative Classroom."
  • The college's 2022-2027 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan states that it would "Implement new training programs for professional staff and faculty on issues including but not limited to race, culture, gender, disability, sexual orientation and religious bias; cultural competency and empathy; and the intersectionality of identity."
  • The college's 2022-2027 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan states that it would "Ensure that all search committees understand and prevent the biases that can occur in job searches."
Curriculum Changes and Requirements
  • The college's 2022-2027 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan states that it would "Infuse diversity, equity, inclusion, and their intersections into the curriculum through courses, a commitment to interdisciplinarity, and increased breadth in the academic experience." The plan also states that the college would "Identify and implement courses and programs that will enhance understanding of DEI initiatives and social justice."
Disciplinary Measures
  • The college implemented a "Bias Incident Response Team" and created an online reporting form. "Bias-related misconduct may include speech acts such as slurs, invective, racial epithets, images (including social media) that discriminate, demean, harass, intimidate, or threaten individuals or groups of people."
Resources
  • The college offers list of anti-racism resources that "will help you understand the historical and current impact of racism in the U.S."
  • The library website has a list of local anti-racist Lancaster organizations.
  • The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion reported that the college became one of 64 institutions hosting a Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Campus Center. The Center "play[s] a vital role in the national TRHT effort to address historical and contemporary effects of racism by building sustainable capacity to promote deep, transformational change." The Center also hosts programs on "racial healing."
  • In the Fall of 2023 the college rolled out "A Week of Inclusion with a new Day of Dialogue." The "theme for this 2023-2024 academic year is 'Vitality @F&M: Feeling Value & Worth'.”
  • The college's 2022-2027 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan states that it would "Establish a liaison program, in which every campus division would identify a DEI representative to act as a liaison to the DEI office."
  • The college's 2022-2027 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan states that it would "​Re-evaluate job descriptions to include DEI goals for each position" and "Institute policy changes to require all job candidates to articulate their alignment with F&M’s DEI values."
  • The college's 2022-2027 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan states that it would "Embed DEI goals into reappointment, promotion and tenure reviews, and performance assessment of FPS [Faculty and Professional Staff]."
  • The college's 2022-2027 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan states that it would "​Support faculty, professional staff, and student interest and engagement in building racial healing and reconciliation into the curriculum and student life."
Symbolic Actions
  • The college named its "first vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion."
