School Information
Lee University is a private, comprehensive university located in Cleveland, TN, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Lee is emerging as a leader in higher education in the southeastern region and is consistently ranked in the "Top Tier" in the South by U.S. News & World Report (Comprehensive Medium-Size Universities). Lee is also ranked by Princeton Review's "Best Colleges" and is one of the 141 colleges named Best in the Southeast. Over the past two decades, Lee has become one of the largest Christ-centered private institutions in Tennessee and the largest in the Appalachian College Association. During that period, the university has undergone a remarkable transformation that has included significant growth in academic programs, student enrollment, faculty expertise and diversity, as well as an expanded sense of mission and vision.
General Information
There is no evidence Lee University advocates anti-racism or critical race theory or that students are subject to any required diversity training. The University does not post resources supporting these practices or ideas.

  • The University provides an option to report incidents of hate/bias on its LiveSafe App.
Political Actions and Support for Anti-Racism
  • In 2020, the University President released a statement titled "An Open Letter on Current Racial Tensions in Our Country." The statement addressed the death of George Flyod explaining it "shows us that we still have so far to go to create a racially just nation, and that we need to move the problem of racial equality up in our ordering of personal and institutional priorities." It continues that Flyod's death "reminds us how urgent it is for those of us at mostly-white places like Lee to find ways to listen better to our minority students, staff, and neighbors."
Program and Research Funding
  • Lee University’s Diversity Committee “raises awareness of diversity issues on campus and implements programs which highlight minority cultures.”
  • The Project Mosiac Grant "seeks to develop a climate of inclusion and belonging in [the] area" and  "originated from the institution’s collective biblical commitment to address the challenges of social injustices while promoting the values of hospitality, benevolence, advocacy and missional communities."

Resources
  • The Diversity Council at Lee University is composed of multiple organizations that offer opportunities towards promoting diversity and equity on campus.
  • The University has an office of Racial and Ethnic Relations which "was formed to help racially, ethnically, and internationally diverse students, employees, and alumni know they are valued members" of the community.
  • The University's Imago Dei video series and movement is "dedicated to starting conversations about social justice issues and recognizing the image of God in everyone."
Symbolic Actions
  • On June 18, 2020, “Lee University president Paul Conn announced Thursday that the school is establishing an Office of Racial and Ethnic Relations with local educator Gloria Scott-Richmond as its first director.”
  • Following the mass shootings in 2022, the University’s Office of Racial and Ethnic Relations issued a statement offering prayer and “calls for an honest dialogue in addressing the ‘persistent evil of racism’ within the country.”
